This National AccessAbility Week (NAAW) 2025, Spotlight Development Inc. proudly joins communities across Canada in recognizing the leadership, resilience, and contributions of persons with disabilities—and in advancing the conversation around accessibility in housing and community design.
The theme for this year’s NAAW, “Breaking Barriers Together: Paving the Way for an Inclusive Future,” reflects a shared responsibility to remove physical, social, and systemic obstacles.
Toronto - May 26, 2025
As a member of the ULI Toronto-led Accelerating Accessibility Coalition (AAC), Spotlight is working alongside national developers, accessibility advocates, and public sector partners to ensure more Canadians can live independently and with dignity—regardless of age or ability.
Why Accessibility in Housing Matters:
-Over 1 million Torontonians are seniors or people with disabilities—nearly one-third of the city’s population.
-Nearly 500,000 Canadians with disabilities report being unable to access the aids or devices they need to live independently.
-85% of older adults would prefer to age in place, yet most new homes are not designed with their needs in mind.
-Accessibility features that exceed building code requirements can be integrated at less than 1% of a project’s total construction cost when considered early in the design process.
To help demonstrate both the need and the opportunity, we encourage you to watch "A Tale of Two Homes"—a short film on inclusive design produced by ULI Toronto, The Daniels Corporation, Confound Films, in collaboration with StopGap Foundation and AccessNow. The video explores how thoughtful design can bridge the gap between limitation and independence.
We extend our thanks to the many accessibility leaders featured in this initiative, including Luke Anderson, Neisha Mitchell, Dr. Kate Chung, Doug Buck, Jacob Cohen, Maayan Ziv, Linda Weichel, and Megan Aird, whose lived experience and advocacy continue to inspire change.
At Spotlight, we remain committed to building inclusive communities—one home at a time.
