The discussions, graciously hosted by the Honourable Wayne Long, Member of Parliament, saw a diverse cross-section of housing stakeholders gather to strategize on solutions. Spotlight Development Inc. extends its sincere gratitude to the Honourable Wayne Long and the Minister of Finance, the Honourable François-Philippe Champagne, for convening these critical dialogues.
"We have long believed that true progress on Canada's housing challenges hinges on all levels of government coming together at the same table," said Sherry Larjani, President & CEO, Spotlight Development Inc. "It was incredibly encouraging to witness this commitment from federal and provincial governments, and to contribute our voice alongside leading industry partners."
The roundtable included prominent figures such as David Wilkes, President of the Building Industry and Land Development Association (BILD); Marlene Coffey, CEO of the Ontario Non-Profit Housing Association (ONPHA); Jim Ritchie, President, Tridel Group of Companies and President & CEO, Deltera; and representatives from Habitat for Humanity Canada, Dream, and Great Gulf.
Spotlight Development Inc. strongly supports recommendations aimed at accelerating affordable housing development and advocates for the swift implementation of several key measures:
Seamless Transition to Build Canada Homes: Ensuring a smooth and immediate transition to this federal initiative is critical to preventing project delays and maintaining momentum in housing construction.
Establishment of an Acquisition Fund: A strategically managed fund is essential to empower non-profit organizations to acquire and preserve existing affordable housing stock for long-term community benefit.
Expanded GST Rebate: Advocating for the expansion of the GST rebate to include all new home buyers on homes up to at least $1.3 million. This measure would significantly reduce purchasing costs for Canadians and stimulate much-needed demand in the market.
Elimination of Development Charges (DCs): Proposing the elimination of Development Charges on new housing projects to drastically reduce upfront construction costs. This crucial step would accelerate project viability and increase the pace of housing supply.
"Collaboration across all levels of government and with the full spectrum of housing partners—from non-profits to private developers—is the only viable path to building the safe and affordable communities that every Canadian deserves," added Sherry Larjani. "We are steadfast in our commitment to doing our part to turn these recommendations into tangible solutions."
Spotlight Development Inc. will continue to engage with government and industry leaders to advance these critical policy reforms and contribute to a more robust and equitable housing future for all Canadians.
