A group of women is building something new on top of an old strip club, they're part of an all female developing team whose new project Reina hopes to showcase the talents of women in their field. Since developer Taya Cook says this whole idea started with an article that showed pictures of Toronto's Condo Kings, the men shaping development in this city.
"It was striking a very visual representation of what experience in the development industry has looked like for the last fifteen years and we want to know where the Condo Queens are?"
Taya Cook joined forces with fellow developer Sherry Larjani. They've created a team of more than a dozen female engineers architects and urban planners to work on a project in Etobicoke called Reina, which is Spanish for Queen. The housing development will replace the former House of Lancaster strip club. The idea is to bring together everybody who is a Queen in the industry and showcase how the team is focused on bringing in fresh ideas; things only women and mothers might think of, like stroller parking and better lighting for safer garage use. They will hold community design consultation in July to hear more ideas from residents.
